House Rules are a set of alternate rules that can be used while playing Uno. Three different types of house rules were officially released by Mattel, but many players have created their own rules. On this wiki, "House Rules" may be used to refer to any variation from the rules that is not in the classic game, such as stacking two or more cards of the same number or symbol during only one turn.

Notes

  • Despite rule #4 clearly stating that you may only play one Draw Two or Wild Draw Four at a time, many people have disregarded this rule, especially in the case of Draw Two cards. For example, someone might put two Draw Two cards at once on his/her turn.
  • Many people allow "stacking," or playing as many cards as you want on your turn at a time, as long as all of the cards have the same number/symbol. For example, someone might play a green 7, a yellow 7, and a red 7 all at once on his or her turn. This can lead to discrepancies in whether or not a player is required to call "Uno" if the last cards he or she has played are stacked. Since this rule is not official, the players must decide whether or not it is required to call "Uno" in this case.
  • Due to its obscurity and confusing nature, the challenge rule is almost never used in casual games. Many people have never even heard of it. Despite this, the console and mobile versions of Uno both use this rule. This often leads to inexperienced players, who likely do not understand the rule, drawing 6 cards most of the time, even when it is obvious not to challenge.
  • Many people allow a Wild Draw Four to be placed on top of a Draw Two. For example, if one person plays a Draw Two, some people say that the next person in line could play a Wild Draw Four, and then the next person in line would have to draw six cards or put another Wild Draw Four. People rarely allow a Draw Two to be placed on top of a Wild Draw Four in such cases.
  • If a player plays a Draw Two, and the next player has a Draw Two as well, that player may choose to draw two cards even though he or she has a Draw Two. The console version of Uno acknowledges this and gives players the option to choose to either draw or stack. However, the mobile version of Uno forces anyone who has a playable Draw Two or Wild Draw Four to play it in these cases. With physical cards, it would be impossible to force players with a Draw Two or Wild Draw Four to play it in these cases without looking at the hands of other players, therefore ruining the game.

"Uno Out"

  1. When a player has only one card remaining, he or she must call "Uno Out" while placing it down, and the same rules of catching "Uno" apply. Catching "Uno" refers to when one player forgets to say "Uno" and another player points this out before the next player has begun his or her turn.
